Rules on social gatherings in England expected to be tightened from next week

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce that rules on social gatherings in England will change from next Monday.

Under the measures, which are reportedly set to be announced on Wednesday, it will become illegal to hold gatherings of more than six people in England and those breaking the regulations could be fined.

Certain types of gatherings are expected to be exempt from the rules, including schools, weddings, funerals and team sports which are complying with COVID-secure guidelines.

Other exemptions are also expected to be announced.

Currently, rules permit the meeting of up to 30 people from 2 households outside in England, or 6 people from multiple households.

The news comes following a significant rise in Coronavirus cases in the UK over the last week and a further 2,420 cases on Tuesday.
