Opposition MPs have agreed on a strategy as they plan to block a no-deal Brexit.
On Tuesday, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn met with other opposition leaders to discuss ways of preventing a no-deal exit from the European Union. It understood the MPs will try to pass a law blocking a no-deal Brexit when Parliament returns from its summer recess next week.
The talks were described as ‘positive’ by opposition party leaders after the Labour leader said he would focus on passing legislation to block a no-deal Brexit, rather than calling a vote of confidence in Prime Minister Boris Johnson to try and force a general election.
The SNP’s Westminster leader, Ian Blackford said he was “proud” of MPs for coming together for talks, adding “working together, we will win”.
It is thought the MPs will apply for an emergency debate as early as next Tuesday and that further talks will be held in the coming days.
Responding to the talks, the Conservative Party tweeted: “These 6 politicians are plotting to cancel the votes of 17.4 million people. ? We respect the result of the EU Referendum. ? We will get Brexit done by October 31st and take this country forward.”
Meanwhile, the Chancellor Sajid Javid has cancelled his first major speech less than 24 hours before it was due to take place, with some speculating the government is planning an early general election.
