A group of female MPs from the Conservative Party have released a video in which they read out sexist abuse they have received.
The group, including Amber Rudd, Caroline Nokes, Caroline Dinenage and Kirstene Hair talked about the abuse they received – Amber Rudd described abuse including being called a “disgusting human being” and a “Brussels swamp rat”.
Rudd, the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions said: “The fact that people want to talk to you like this is really horrid”.
“I don’t mind hearing people’s frank views about me or my policies but I do mind them using this sort of language.”
The group said that this was just “the tip of the iceberg” and that “women are hounded and subject to unacceptable abuse on social media”.
The video was released ahead of International Women’s Day on Friday 8 March 2019. The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is #BalanceforBetter.
