Matt Hancock resigns as Health Secretary

Matt Hancock has resigned as Health Secretary.

On Friday, Hancock apologised and admitted breaking social distancing rules after pictures were published of him kissing an aide in his office in Whitehall.

In his resignation letter to the prime minister, Mr Hancock said the government “owe it to people who have sacrificed so much in this pandemic to be honest when we have let them down”.

Hancock also reiterated his apology for breaking guidance and apologised “to my family and loved ones for putting them through this”.

Responding to his resignation, the Prime Minister said, “You should be immensely proud of your service. I am grateful for your support and believe that your contribution to public service is far from over.”

Sajid Javid is to replace Mr Hancock as Health Secretary.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said on Saturday evening that Mr Hancock was “right to resign”, though that he should have been sacked by the Prime Minister.
