Moscow fails to meet May’s deadline

Vladimir Putin has not responded to Theresa May’s midnight deadline for an explanation over the poisoning of a former Russian spy and his daughter in the nerve agent attack on March 4.

Theresa May remains under pressure to announce retaliative measures to be placed upon Russia. Moscow has promised that any “punitive” measures will “meet with a response”. Russia has repeatedly denied being behind the use of a nerve agent against Sergei Skripal.

The Prime Minister will chair a meeting of the National Security Council at 8.30am on Wednesday, before she is due to deliver a statement to the Commons at lunchtime. The PM is likely to announce the expulsion of known spies and key diplomats along with some financial sanctions and travel bans aimed at figures in Moscow.

The UK has called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council to update members on the novichok nerve agent attack on former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal. Sources have suggested that Russian diplomats will be expelled from the UK as part of the response to the attack.
