Indoor gyms and swimming pools can reopen in England from 25 July, Oliver Dowden announces

The Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Oliver Dowden has announced that indoor gyms and swimming pools can reopen in England from 25 July.

The key dates Mr Dowden announced for the resumption of cultural and recreational activities are as follows;

  • Indoor gyms, swimming pools and dance studios can reopen in England from 25 July
  • Outdoor swimming pools to reopen from 11 July
  • Outdoor theatres will be able to startup from this Saturday
  • Grassroots sports will be able to start to return this weekend, beginning with cricket.
  • Beauticians, Tattooists, Tanning Salons, Spas and other close contact services can reopen from 13 July (subject to restrictions)

Speaking from Downing Street on Thursday, Mr Dowden urged the public to “do their part” and support cultural venues this summer, after they have faced months of closures due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Indoor theatres are to remain closed for now, but the government has said that small pilots of indoor performances with socially distanced audiences will be taking place.

When venues do reopen, they will have to follow measures to ensure they are safe for both staff and customers. Measures may include online booking in advance of visits and reduced capacity.

Earlier on Thursday, First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon said that organised contact sports will be able to resume for children and young people under the age of 18 in Scotland from 13 July.

Lockdown restrictions were eased in England last Saturday to allow the reopening of outdoor gyms and other venues.
