Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to host a Downing Street press conference after 5pm this evening in which he is expected to make major announcements on the easing of England’s lockdown’s measures.
Mr Johnson will be joined by Professor Chris Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance. The press conference comes one year since Mr Johnson was admitted to hospital after he contracted COVID-19 himself.
In the press conference, Mr Johnson is expected to announce that England will move to the next step of lockdown easing as scheduled from April 12. As part of this, he is expected to confirm the re-opening of non-essential retail outlets, leisure venues, outdoor hospitality and more from this date.
The Prime Minister is also expected to announce plans for allowing international travel this summer, and outline a twice-weekly rapid coronavirus testing scheme to be available in England from this Friday.
On Monday, the UK reported 2,762 new cases of COVID-19. This is the lowest number of daily cases reported since 13 September 2020, though reporting may have been impacted by the Bank Holiday weekend. 26 deaths within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test were also reported.
To date, more than 31.5 million people in the UK have received at least one dose of a vaccine against COVID-19, while more than 5.4 million people have also received their second dose.
