EU Council President Donald Tusk has told the UK it must use an “Ireland First” approach to Brexit negotiations. The important EU figure has said that the contentious issue must be dealt with before negotiations can fully progress.
Mr Tusk said that Britain had yet to come up with “specific and realistic” alternative proposals to keep the Irish border open without the use of the EU’s “backstop” option which has caused anger amongst many key ministers.
Donald Tusk has also dismissed suggestions made by the Chancellor Philip Hammond for a free trade deal covering the financial sector. Tusk has warned that any agreement will not offer the same access for services as current deals do.
