How are England’s lockdown restrictions changing from 17 May?

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed that step 3 lockdown easements will go ahead as planned in England on 17 May.

The lockdown easements on this date will see more parts of the economy re-open, including indoor hospitality. Here’s a look at how restrictions are changing on 17 May…

  • Bars and restaurants can re-open indoors, with no night curfew
  • Other indoor hospitality can reopen and most indoor entertainment (such as cinemas, museums, bowling alleys and children’s play areas) can resume operations.
  • All remaining outdoor entertainment (such as outdoor cinemas) can resume
  • Indoor sports classes and groups competitions can recommence
  • Some large indoor events, such as conferences, can go ahead with crowds of up to 1,000 people
  • Outdoor events with up to 4,000 people will be able to resume
  • A small number of bigger stadium events including Premier League games will be able to welcome up to 10,000 guests
  • All accommodation will be allowed to reopen
  • International travel for leisure reasons will be permitted, subject to local restrictions and quarantine rules
  • Weddings can take place with up to 30 attendees
  • Funerals can accommodate as many people as safe in each venue in line with social distancing requirements
  • Hugging and other physical contact will be permitted
  • Groups of up to 30 people can meet together outside
  • Up to six people (or a maximum of two households) can gather in people’s homes
  • Overnight stays will be allowed in line with the Rule of Six
  • University students can return to face-to-face teaching
  • Face coverings will no longer be recommended for pupils in secondary schools
  • Care home residents will be allowed more named visitors
  • Nightclubs will remain closed and rules on social distancing remain in force.
