Trump Launches New Tariffs At Risk Of Sparking World Trade War

US President Donald Trump has carried out his threat to introduce trade tariffs on US imports of steel and aluminium.

President Trump has ordered for taxes to be imposed of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminium products, starting in 15 days’ time. The decision by the President has caused deep divisions in Washington, including within the President’s administration. Theresa May spoke to the President on the phone last week about threatened tariffs, only for the President to reject her concerns.

Paul Ryan, who is a leading Republican, has expressed his disapproval of the order, amongst many other politicians: “We will continue to urge the administration to narrow this policy so that it is focused only on those countries and practices that violate trade law.”

Criticism towards the tariffs has been widespread, with experts saying the new tax could negatively effect both the US and the rest of the world. President Trump responded to the criticism by saying, “We just want fairness.”
