Thousands of young people to take part in day of Social Action

Thousands of young people across the UK will be taking part in a Social Action day on Saturday as part of an initiative by the National Citizen Service (NCS).

NCS is a government-backed programme established in 2011 to help build a more cohesive, mobile and engaged society. By bringing together young people from different backgrounds for a unique shared experience, NCS helps them to become better individuals, and in turn better citizens.

NCS is open to 16 and 17 year-olds across England and Northern Ireland. The four-phase programme takes place in school holidays and includes outdoor team-building exercises, a residential for participants to learn ‘life skills’, a community-based social action project and an end of programme celebration event. Those that complete the programme become 'NCS Grads' and many of these will go on to take part in many more social action projects in their local and wider communities.

The NCS website encourages young people to 'Do your thing and smash it!' for the Social Action Day. The website says 'Together, you guys can change the world. Let’s show everyone the true power of young people.'

A map at ncsyes.co.uk/action-day shows registered projects for the day, with projects taking place across the UK. The projects range from fundraising for charity, running a community kitchen to completing a Beach Clean and planting trees to help save the environment.

To date, almost 500,000 young people have taken part in the scheme, which costs £50 or less, and twelve million hours of community action have been completed.

The Speaker is collaborating with NCS to encourage youth engagement in politics and participation in social action projects. Young people today will be the leaders and decision makers of tomorrow, so it is vital that they are able to get involved and have their say.
