Office of Jess Phillips MP closed following security advice

Office of Jess Phillips MP closed following security advice

A man has been charged with a public order offence after a disturbance outside the office of Labour MP Jess Phillips.

Michael Roby, 36, has been released on conditional bail and is due to appear in court on 10 October.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson made comments in the House of Commons on Wednesday evening that caused outrage. Labour MP Paula Sherriff raised the murder of MP Jo Cox in the Commons and the regular death threats that MPs face, asking Boris Johnson to stop using "dangerous" language like "Surrender Act". The Prime Minister responded by saying that he had 'never heard so much humbug in all my life".

Mr Johnson has not apologised to the Commons for the comments, and has repeatedly defended them this week. Mr Johnson has said that he believes that getting Brexit done will stop much of the hatred towards MPs - words that have echoed by his most senior adviser, Dominic Cummings.

On Friday, the office of Jess Phillips MP was closed to the public following security advice. Many have sent well wishes to the MP, though some have also sent emails, telling her to feel 'afraid' - such emails have been forwarded to the police.
