Leaders thank key workers in Christmas messages

UK political leaders have thanked critical and key workers in their Christmas messages, in a year where people have stepped up to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Christmas Day, many key workers are working to help keep everyone safe and treat the thousands of people that are currently in hospital with COVID-19, rather than celebrating Christmas with their families.

Thanks have been directed to doctors, nurses and others in the health and care sector, but also people that have worked tirelessly to keep the country going, such as in logistics, supermarkets and many more settings.

People are also being reminded to minimise their social contact with others, with Coronavirus cases particularly high in many parts of the UK.

There is some easing of Coronavirus restrictions for many people in the UK today, however, those living in Tier 4 areas in England will be required to stay at home and not mix with others outside of their household/support bubble.

The Coronavirus vaccine has also been mentioned in leaders' Christmas messages, with the hope being shared that it can help make 2021 a better year. So far, over 600,000 people in the UK have received their first dose of the vaccine, which has been manufactured by Pfizer and BioNTech.

Christmas 2020 is very different, however, people are being urged to stay safe and are being reminded that Christmas time will come again.
