Government battered by Lords over key Brexit bill

The Government has suffered a heavy defeat in the House of Lords over its policy of leaving the EU Customs Union.

Peers overwhelmingly voted in favour of the amendment to the key Brexit bill, which seeks to keep open the option of Britain staying in some form of customs union with the EU - something Theresa May is against.

Peers voted in favour by 348 to 225, giving a majority of 123.

The defeat is likely to be bad news for the Government, and will likely result in many further amendments when the bill returns to the House of Commons next month.
