Republic of Ireland to close schools and public facilities amid Coronavirus outbreak

Schools, colleges and other public facilities located in the Republic of Ireland are to close amid the Coronavirus outbreak.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said the measures will take effect from 18:00 this evening and will continue until 29 March. Indoor gatherings of more than 100 people and outdoor gatherings of more than 500 people should also be cancelled, Mr Varadkar said.

One elderly woman has died in the Republic of Ireland so far after contracting the virus.
