Zante, Greece

New quarantine restrictions for arrivals from Greece to some parts of the UK

New quarantine restrictions are being implemented in parts of the UK from this evening for arrivals from Greece.

Travellers from Greece will be required to self-isolate for 14 days - if they arrive in Scotland after 4am on Thursday.

Meanwhile, arrivals to Wales from this evening, specifically from the Greek island of Zante, are being asked to self-isolate for 14 days.

The new measures come following multiple separate clusters of the Coronavirus in the UK, linked to the Greek island of Zante. The clusters have so far amounted to over 30 cases in the last week from 4 flights.

Last week, passengers on a flight to Wales from Zante were told that they must self-isolate after at least seven people on board tested positive for COVID-19.

In a written statement on Tuesday evening, Welsh Health Minister Vaughan Gething said;

"It is almost certain that travellers returning to Wales from areas of higher Covid-19 incidence will lead to further seeding of infections within Wales. Travel into Wales from mainland Europe drove the first wave of Covid-19.

Without action, it is likely that there will be significant health and economic impacts arising from new clusters of infections and renewed disease transmission in Wales."

In addition to asking those arriving into Wales from Zante to self-isolate, Mr Gething has said that all passengers on a flight arriving into Cardiff from Zante this evening will be given guidance on self-isolating through a letter and that all passengers on the flight will be offered a Covid-19 antigen test within 48 hours of their return.

These passengers will then be offered a repeat test 8 days after returning home. Passengers returning from the Greek island to other Welsh airports are asked to self-isolate and request testing.

Currently, Greece remains on the UK Government's Travel Corridors list, meaning that people in England do not have to self-isolate on their arrival from the country. Mr Gething has though requested that an early meeting be held between the UK Government and devolved administrations on Wednesday to allow consideration of the Joint Biosecurity Centre's latest assessment of the risk from the virus.

Both Zante and other parts of Greece are popular destinations for UK tourists, so the new measures can be expected to cause significant disruption to people's travel plans.
