Delays to postal deliveries as COVID pandemic leaves Royal Mail short-staffed

Royal Mail has published a list of areas today where they say deliveries have been delayed due to its workforce being affected by the Coronavirus pandemic.

28 areas in the UK have been listed, with the postal service saying post might be late in these areas as deliveries are 'likely to be limited'.

The Government's vaccine deployment minister Nadhim Zahawi said though at the weekend, responding to a tweet from Labour's Wes Streeting, that the Government would work with Royal Mail to ensure those vaccine invitations, some of which are currently being sent out as letters, are prioritised.

Members of the public have been taking to social media over recent days to vent frustrations about not receiving deliveries, some for extended periods. In a service update on Tuesday, the postal service said;

"Royal Mail is working hard to deliver the most comprehensive and high quality service we can to all our customers, large and small. The combination of greatly increased uptake of online shopping, and the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, mean that all delivery companies are experiencing exceptionally high volumes."

"Every single parcel and letter is important to us. Despite our best efforts and significant investment in extra resource, some customers may experience slightly longer delivery timescales than our usual service standards. This is due to the exceptionally high volumes we are seeing, exacerbated by the coronavirus-related measures we have put in place in local mail centres and delivery offices to keep our people and customers safe. In such cases, we always work hard to get back to providing our usual level of service as quickly as we can. Thank you for your patience and understanding."

Deliveries in the following areas may be delayed due to 'resourcing issues', according to Royal Mail;

  • Ashford (TN23-TN27)
  • Barnsley (S70, S71, S72 and S75)
  • Basildon (SS13-SS16)
