UK government to ban exercise outside of homes if people flout Coronavirus lockdown rules

The UK Health Secretary has warned that the government will ban people from leaving their homes to exercise if too many people flout the rules.

The government had said that it was fine to exercise once a day, on your own, or with members of the same household while observing social distancing rules. However, images and reports have emerged of people heading out into the sunshine in large numbers, in cases ignoring the social distancing rules and sometimes even sunbathing.

Temperatures are expected to hit 20C in some parts of the UK on Sunday as the country edges closer to summer weather. The fine weather has led to concerns that increasing numbers of people may flout social distancing rules. Speaking to Sky News on Sunday, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said, ‘Sunbathing is against the rules that have been set out for important public health reasons'.

Speaking on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show, Mr Hancock said;

"If you don't want us to have to take the step to ban exercise of all forms outside of your own home, then you've got to follow the rules"

He said that most people had been adhering to social distancing rules in the UK, but added: "Let's not have a minority spoiling it for everybody."

Across the UK, at least 4,313 have now died after contracting the virus, according to official figures as of 5pm on April 3.
