Final sum for Brexit divorce remains uncertain

A senior MP has claimed that the final sum for the Brexit divorce bill is ‘shrouded in uncertainty’, after a watchdog stressed the current estimate is based on a number of assumptions.

The National Audit Office has said the Government’s estimation of £35-£39bn was ‘reasonable.’

However, the financial watchdog has said that this figure could be significantly higher with ‘relatively small changes’ to future events.

It is thought that due to EU budget rules, the UK could have to pay up to £3 billion more in budget contributions after Brexit day in March 2019 than estimated by Treasury in order to offset earlier payments being lower.

Uncertainty also remains over the EU Pension scheme and how this might add to the Brexit bill.
