EU to consider introducing temporary restrictions on non-essential travel

The EU could introduce temporary restrictions on non-essential travel to the EU for 30 days, it is understood.

Under reported plans by an EU official, foreign nationals would be banned from entering the Schengen open border zone. The zone consists of 22 of the 27 European Union members, plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Lichtenstein.

Britain and Ireland are not part of the zone.

EU leaders are expected to discuss the plans during a video conference on Tuesday, according to Reuters.
