Yet another defeat for Theresa May on Brexit plans

Today’s vote sees the Prime Minister’s Brexit plan defeated 303 votes to 258.

The leader of the opposition, Jeremy Corbyn, has called on the PM to “to come to the despatch box now and admit her strategy has failed and bring forward to the House a coherent plan.”

The government blamed the opposition’s loyalty to partisan politics for the loss of the vote.

Whilst, Theresa May was not present to see the result, the defeat of her motion was made possible by the rebellion of Tory Brexiteers.

The rebels, known as the Tory European Research Group which is chaired by Jacob Rees-Mogg, feared that the vote ruled out the option of a No-Deal Brexit.

A statement issued from No.10 said:

“While we didn’t secure the support of the Commons this evening, the prime minister continues to believe, and the debate itself indicated, that far from objecting to securing changes to the backstop that will allow us to leave with a deal, there was a concern from some Conservative colleagues about taking no deal off the table at this stage.”

The question remains, what will happen now?
