Decision on Brexit proposals could come by the end of the week

A decision by the EU on Boris Johnson's proposals for Brexit could be made by the end of the week, it is understood.

The UK Prime Minister spoke with Emmanuel Macron over the phone on Sunday, when it understood that the French President urged Mr Johnson to "engage in discussions swiftly" so that a decision on the latest Brexit proposals could be made by the EU this week.

Talks with the EU were due to take place at the weekend but were postponed after the European Commission said Boris Johnson's new proposals "do not provide a basis for concluding an agreement". The new proposals aimed to get around the issue of the Irish backstop, however, the European Commission said "problems" still remain.

The UK government has said the EU needs to show compromise this week, sighting it as the final chance to strike a deal.

The UK is currently set to fall out of the European Union on October 31, with or without a deal. However, a bill was passed by Parliament in order to try and prevent a no-deal and make the Prime Minister request an extension - the government has repeatedly implied that it may not request or accept an extension. There have also been suggestions that a request for an extension may be rejected, perhaps by France or Hungary.

On Monday, in a boost for the government in their aim to deliver Brexit, Scotland's Court of Session ruled that it would not be 'necessary or appropriate' to force the Government to ask for a Brexit delay. Monday also saw former Conservative MP Heidi Allen join the Liberal Democrats, a party campaigning for an 'Exit from Brexit'.
