Britons told to avoid all but essential travel and contact with others

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has told Britons to avoid pubs, clubs, restaurants, theatres and other social venues amid the Coronavirus outbreak.

He has also urged members of the public to only make essential journeys in the ‘national fightback’ against the virus.

The comments came in the PM’s first daily televised news conference in relation to the Coronavirus.

New advice also states that anyone within a household where someone has a high temperature or persistent cough should stay at home for 14 days.

Measures are expected to escalate over the coming days, with those with underlying health problems to be told to isolate for three months. Londoners are being urged to pay particular attention to government advice due to the spread of the virus in the capital moving faster than in other parts of the country.

The government’s chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance said at the news conference that the UK is around three weeks behind Italy in terms of the spread of the virus. Italy has been put into lockdown amid the pandemic.
