Briefing – Thursday 20th July 2018

New Brexit Secretary, Dominic Raab has made his first visit to Brussels since taking on the role. While EU states are told to step up “no deal” preparations, Mr Raab has called for “renewed energy, vigour and vim” in negotiations with the EU.

Police believe they have been able to identify the suspected perpetrators of the novichok attack on Sergi and Yulia Skripal, the Press Association has reported. Officers believe that several Russians were involved in the attempted murder, with the police looking for more than one suspect.

Theresa May is making a trip to the Irish Border for the first time as prime minister amid ongoing uncertainty over her plan for leaving the EU.

And in other news,

The public spending watchdog, the National Audit Office, has stated that UK drivers may have to purchase a permit in order to drive on EU roads after Brexit. In NAO’s report, they stated that this might be a possibility in the case of a no-deal situation between the UK and the EU.
