Briefing Tuesday 11th September

The UK economy has profited a great deal from the heatwave and World Cup in July this year. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) found that the UK economy grew by around 0.6% between May and July; 0.3% of which was achieved in the month of July alone. Rob Kent-Smith from the ONS stated: “Services grew particularly strongly, with retail sales performing well, boosted by warm weather and the World Cup.”

Kim Jong Un wants to meet with Donald Trump again. Kim made the request in the form of a hand-delivered letter and it is believed this move has come after a break down in diplomacy between the nations subordinates. This also comes after the North Korean’s refrained from parading ICBM’s during their Sunday military parade, perhaps a gesture of goodwill towards the US.

Mayors of New York and London have penned a joint op-ed in the Guardian promising they will take action on climate change. Mayors Bill de Blasio and Sadiq Khan claimed that both cities will disinvest in fossil fuel companies over the next few years. Both mayors have claimed they want to take a leading role in the fight to tackle climate change due to the failures of their national governments.

And in other news,

Ryan Thomas has been crowned the victor of Celebrity Big Brother 2018. The ex-Coronation Street actor claimed that win in what has been a controversial series of the programme, with walk-outs and fights being a feature throughout. Ofcom received more than 11,000 complaints about the series this year.
