Briefing Friday 19th October

Donald Trump has threatened to close ‘our southern border’ as reports emerge about Honduran migrants heading for the United States. A caravan that originated in Honduras is heading for the US with as many as 4,000 other central Americans also heading north. Most are fleeing violence and poverty in their home countries.

An attack on the leadership of Afghanistan’s Kandahar province killed several members of the government, including the police chief and the intelligence chief; the governor was critically injured. The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack. American General Austin Miller was in the room at the time of the attack but escaped unharmed.

US and UK governments have both announced they will not be attending an upcoming conference in Saudi Arabia following the killing of Jamal Khashoggi. UK International Trade secretary Liam Fox and US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin have both stated they will not attend the Future Investment Initiative next month.

And in other news,

Banksy’s shredded painting was meant to shred the whole way. In a video uploaded by the artist, he showed off the mechanism within the frame of the painting. In the video it showed the whole painting being destroyed, accompanied by the caption, ‘in rehearsal it worked every time’.
