Boris Johnson backs Priti Patel following bullying inquiry

The UK Government’s independent adviser on standards Sir Alex Allan has resigned after Prime Minister Boris Johnson backed Home Secretary Priti Patel following a bullying inquiry.

The Prime Minister has ruled that Priti Patel did not breach the ministerial code, following an inquiry into bullying allegations against her. Sir Alex Allan, who authored the inquiry’s report has since resigned.

In a statement, Sir Allan said;

“I recognise that it is for the prime minister to make a judgement on whether actions by a minister amount to a breach of the ministerial code.

“But I feel that it is right that I should now resign from my position as the prime minister’s independent adviser on the code.”

It is understood that in the report, Sir Allan found Ms Patel’s approach on occassions “amounted to behaviour that can be described as bullying”.

An investigation into bullying allegations against Home Secretary Priti Patel was launched in March, less than a month after the resignation of the Home Office’s most senior civil servant, Sir Philip Rutnam. Sir Rutnam’s resignation came at a time of multiple allegations about Ms Patel’s behaviour.

Ms Patel has released a statement saying she was sorry “that my behaviour in the past has upset people”.
