23 Russian diplomats to be expelled from the UK

Prime Minister Theresa May has announced that 23 Russian diplomats will be expelled from the UK in response to the nerve agent attack on former Russian spy Sergei Skripal.  Speaking on Wednesday, Mrs May said “this will be the single biggest expulsion for over 30 years and it will reflect the fact that this is not the first time the Russian state has acted against our country.”

The PM has also announced that no ministers or members of the Royal Family will be attending this summer’s World Cup.

Russia responded to the expulsions, saying “We consider this hostile action as totally unacceptable, unjustified and shortsighted.” Russia had previously warned Britain to expect relation should the UK place sanctions on the foreign state. Russia has announced UK diplomats will be expelled from Moscow in retaliation.

Meanwhile, NATO has said the attack was a “clear breach of international norms and agreements”.

The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for British citizens visiting Russia.

“Due to heightened political tensions between the UK and Russia, you should be aware of the possibility of anti-British sentiment or harassment at this time.”

“You’re advised to remain vigilant, avoid any protests or demonstrations and avoid commenting publicly on political developments.”
